A Thousand Graceful Inventions
Venue
Join the UQ Chamber Singers as they present a wonderful evening of musical canons in songs, motets and Masses from the 14th and 16th centuries at St John's Cathedral on the 20th October. While the choir will be directed by Graeme Morton, a pre-concert talk will be given by Dr Denis Collins (University of Queensland) and Dr Jason Stoessel (University of New England).
Denis and Jason regularly publish their research on Medieval and Renaissance music in leading international journals and present their work at conferences throughout Australia and overseas.
The repertoire for this concert is drawn from the rich world of medieval and renaissance polyphony where musical canons of every kind were composed for religious, private and civic occasions. Some of this music in this concert has not been heard since the middle ages, such as the Kyrie and Sanctus from the Tournai manuscript. These have been reconstructed and prepared for performance by Jason and Denis. Other compositions on the program show how composers delighted in all manner of musical canons: singing the music forwards or backwards, with different numbers of voices starting together or after each other, or with lengthening and shortening of melodies. Canons were great favourites of composers and audiences and are still part of music-making in different styles around the world.
