The School of Music is offering a week-long intensive training workshop in the fundamentals of musicianship suitable for students preparing to undertake tertiary studies in music.

These workshops are meant specifically for incoming Bachelor of Music (Honours) & Bachelor of Arts (Music ) students in 2019 and will take place in Room 478 at the UQ School of Music, St Lucia, Zelman Cowen building

The two sessions each day will be from 9am - 11am & 2pm - 4pm


This workshop will provide you with:

  • Knowledge of basic music notation
    • Pitch: staff, clefs, note values, accidentals, scales, major and minor keys, key signatures.
    • Metre and rhythm: simple and compound metres, time signatures, basics of notating musical rhythm.
  • Aural skills:
    • Perception and recognition of basic metre and rhythmic patterns.
    • Perception and recognition of basic pitch relations.
  • Ability to recognise and apply basic chord progressions and cadences in different keys using idioms of four-part tonal practice.
  • Keyboard applications:
    • Workshop content will be presented through the medium of keyboard instruction using a dedicated electronic keyboard laboratory. No prior instruction in a keyboard instrument is required.

Schedule of Activities:

  • Each day will comprise four hours of instruction: two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon. Practice time will be available during the rest of the day in the dedicated keyboard lab.
  • Learning activities will include both group work and individual tasks. Feedback from staff will be provided continuously to workshop participants on all activities.
