Stefanos Melas - “A Performer’s Analysis of Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade

"This presentation will discuss the research I have undertaken for my PhD in Music Performance at The University of Queensland. My thesis concerns Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium) for Solo Violin, String Orchestra, Harp and Percussion. Approaching conceptual and practical issues concurrently, my presentation will detail the development and documentation of my original interpretation of the Serenade. My research employs methods derived from artistic research, autoethnography, and practice-led research. I analyze historical, performance-related, and score-based topics which have arisen from my individual practice in conjunction with data acquired from interviews, lessons, and an examination of the manuscript."
