Associate Professor Denis Collins will present a selection of music by the great Elizabethan composer William Byrd (1543-1623). With a reputation as the finest musician of his time in England, Byrd left a rich legacy of choral and instrumental music. His sacred music has been a constant feature in the long tradition of English cathedral music, while growing numbers of early music enthusiasts appreciate all areas of Byrd’s expressive, varied and imaginative musical style. This program will trace Byrd’s contributions to all of the musical genres of his day and will explore how Byrd’s conflicted and often deeply troubled relationships between the Roman Catholic and Anglican faiths left an indelible mark on his creative outlook and artistic legacy.
