Using Swidler’s cultural toolkit as a theoretical framework, Dominic Fitzgerald sets out to demonstrate how a music teacher-practitioner's journey is a continuum of discoveries and acquisition of strategies of thinking, being and doing. As an autoethnographic exercise, he highlights certain milestones of my personal journey from student to student-teacher, to practicing educator, to show how his ways of developing musical and professional capacity are informed by said experiences.

Throughout the course of this presentation, key milestones/highlights of Dominic Fitzgerald's journey in the choral world will be illustrated through concert experiences with the Temple Church (London) Choir, working with Roger Sayer, various discussions with Dr Graeme Morton, school achievements, technical breakthroughs and realisations to name a few. For the listeners, takeaways from this presentation should include strategies for developing routines of thinking around self-improvement, the psychology of recruitment and retention in choirs with adolescent boys, conceptualising sound in a choral sense – but inspired by orchestral colours, textures and sonic embodiments that are transferable and universal. Through these experiences, Dominic Fitzgerald has come to realise the integral value of choral music in music education and hopes that his experiences will inspire others to explore as he has.
