The Commonwealth Government has provided funding for a National Music Teachers Mentorship Program (NMTMP) for a period of three years aimed at improving the quality of music education in Australian primary schools through high quality mentoring of generalist classroom teachers. Specifically, it is expected that mentoring will improve the confidence and competence of generalist classroom teachers in teaching music.

The Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) is piloting the NMTMP in a number of States and Territories in collaboration with Departments of Education. This project evaluates the effectiveness of the pilot program as implemented in NSW and Victoria.
