The University of Queensland is holding a composition competition for a three-to-five minute piece for orchestra that will also be rescored for brass quintet (two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba).

Prize:

  • First prize: $5000
  • Second prize: $3000
  • Third prize: $1500

The winning piece:

  • a celebration of all of UQ – its research, teaching and engagement
  • a sense of active energy, optimism and urgency
  • an expression of creative imagination.

The winning piece will be performed by at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre by the UQ Symphony Orchestra conducted by Warwick Potter on Sunday 15 October 2017 at 2pm, and the chamber version will be performed by members of the orchestra in UQ’s Great Court on Saturday 14 October.

The music will be used widely for three years in UQ’s engagement activities.

Entry requirements:

Submit a PDF file containing the score for orchestra (2.2.2.2 4.3.3.1 timpani 2 perc. Strings) and an additional rescoring of the piece for brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba). Include an audio file containing a midi realisation of the orchestral score. All entries emailed to concerts@uq.edu.au.

The winning composer will be required to provide performance parts by 25 August 2017.
