Biography
S. Alex Ruthmann is an accomplished educator and researcher, currently serving as the Area Head and Associate Professor of Interactive Media and Business at NYU Shanghai, as well as an Associated Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at NYU Steinhardt. He is the Founder and Director of the NYU Music Experience Design Lab (MusEDLab) and plays a key role in the Program on Creativity and Innovation at NYU Shanghai.
Ruthmann's work focuses on innovative technologies and experiences for music-making and learning, collaborating with esteemed organizations such as the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, and UNESCO. His research, supported by major grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Science Foundation, explores sustainable entrepreneurship in classical music training and the intersection of arts and educational technologies.
With a global impact, MusEDLab projects, including Groove Pizza and aQWERTYon, engage over 8 million users in more than 150 countries. Ruthmann is also involved in various international research initiatives, co-editing significant publications in music education and technology. His academic journey began with a B.Mus. from the University of Michigan, followed by advanced degrees in Music Education from Oakland University.
