Senior academics from The University of Queensland’s School of Music have released a new album Oranges under the Full Moon on ABC Classics.
The album of Professor Liam Viney (piano), Associate Professor Adam Chalabi (violin) and Patrick Murphy (cello) pays homage to one of Australia’s foremost creative voices – Sydney-based composer Paul Stanhope.
It features both of his piano trios which were written 11 years apart as well as the ‘Dawn Lament’ for solo cello and ‘Agnus Dei’ for violin and piano.
The UQ Chamber Players are joined on this recording by one of Australia’s leading interpreters of contemporary vocal music, soprano Jane Sheldon, for three songs which are set to texts written by the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.
Paul Stanhope has long been established as one of Australia’s most creative and innovative composers. He has produced critically acclaimed works across a variety of genres from large scale choral and orchestral works to intimate chamber scores.
He was the recipient of the Toru Takemitsu Composition Prize in 2004 as well as two APRA/ Australian Music Centre Awards in 2011 and 2018.
The UQ Chamber Players consists of performers on staff at UQ’s School of Music.
Professor Viney has previously released three albums on ABC Classics with the Viney Grinberg Duo. Adam Chalabi and Patrick Murphy have released three albums on Decca Australia as members of the Tinalley String Quartet. Both of these ensembles are in residence at UQ’s School of Music.
“The opportunity to work closely with Paul throughout the rehearsal and recording process and workshop these iconic Australian works was a real privilege,” Associate professor Chalabi said.
“Paul has very specific ideas about the sound world surrounding his work and is constantly seeking to evolve his own compositions; which makes the rehearsal process particularly interactive, creative and exciting.”
