2023 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Finals

Student ensembles from the UQ School of Music who are finalists in the 2021 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Memorial Prize in Chamber Music competition are invited to perform their works for this special event which is broadcast on 4MBS Classic FM.

UQ Chamber Music Academy

UQ Chamber Music Academy is an unique program bringing together the cream of the crop secondary school aged string players and pianists in Queensland to study chamber music. Formally established this year, the program has been a working concept since 2021, when Amogus Trio won the Robert Salzer 1st Prize at the Strike A Chord National Chamber Music Championship. They were followed by both The IncrediBows and Trio Bellissimo, who were among the 12 groups nationally to reach the grand finals in Melbourne in 2022. The program was born so that more students can experience the incredible joy of playing chamber music.

The UQ School of Music throughout the year promotes excellence in performance and composition by inviting students to participate in a range of competitions. This concert will feature the students who won the 2023 Sleath String Performance Prize, Isolde Schaupp Memorial Prize for Percussion, Margaret Nickson Prize for Voice and Piano, and Ethel Osborn Prize.

Tides of Ocean

Brisbane Chamber Choir will perform a concert that celebrates the choral sounds of some of our leading contemporary voices in a program that focusses on the ocean and the stars. It includes works by Ēriks Ešenvalds and Australians Stephen Leek, Matthew Orlovich, Andrew Schultz, and others.

SignWaves

SignWaves, a collective of flautists from The University of Queensland, bring a diverse range of flute repertoire of varying ensemble sizes from solo flute to flute choir to delight a diversity of audiences.

Dots+Loops: MATERIAL

MATERIAL weaves delicate foley, live percussion, droning feedback and pulsing synths together into a seamless performance both contemplative and relentless in equal measures. Created and performed by composer/producer Connor D’Netto and performance artist Yvette Agapow, the collaboration draws on their shared contemporary classical, ambient and noise music practices, meditating on both the materials and the materiality of art and the work of artists.

Instant Music

An ensemble of UQ student improvisers will invent music in real time, responding to each other's visual and audible cues, creating melodies, rhythms, riffs, grooves, textures and soundscapes that constantly shift and develop. The culmination of a semester-long course in Creative Music Making.

Robert Davidson

Robert Davidson plays his own solo piano works, including the first solo performance of Queensland at Home, which includes a collection of home movies made in Queensland during the 1920s-40s, recently restored by the State Library of Queensland and Sally Golding.

Aaron Brown’s Early Modern in collaboration with Black Square String Quartet presents a program of new compositions based on early music sources. Ancient songs and dances are re-imagined in a novel fusion of early music, modal jazz and world music that delights the senses and blurs the boundaries between past and present.
