Master of Music Musicianship and Technology Courses
All Master of Music students are required to complete core courses in musicianship and music technology as part of their program. These courses require students to have previous training in these disciplines, including the use of Ableton software, modern music notation and aural ear training. Students who did not complete this training in their undergraduate degree can prepare for these core courses by taking preparatory courses as program electives. These preparatory courses are designed for students without previous training.
Music Technology
The School of Music's technology curriculum is built around Ableton Live, Push and Link.
If you do not have any previous training in the use of any music software programs, you should enrol in and pass elective course MUSC7005 (Introduction to Music Technology) before enrolling in core course MUSC7010 (Applications of Music Technology).
If you have some training in music software programs but you have not used Ableton, please meet with the course coordinator for MUSC7010. The course coordinator will advise you which course you should enrol in first.
Students cannot enrol in MUSC7005 if they have passed MUSC7010.
Musicianship
The School of Music's musicianship curriculum is built around modern music notation, keyboard skills, and aural ear training.
If you do not have any previous training in any of these skills, you should enrol in and pass elective course MUSC7050 (Musicianship 1) before enrolling in core courses MUSC7060 (Advanced Musicianship) and MUSC7470 (Counterpoint).
If you have some training in these skills but you are not confident you are ready for the core courses, you can take an opt-in test in Orientation Week to check if you are ready. You must complete the expression of interest webform by 4pm on Monday of Orientation Week and attend the test when it is scheduled.
You will be advised of the outcome of your test in Orientation Week.
- If you do not pass the test, you should enrol in and pass MUSC7050 before enrolling in the core courses.
- If you pass the test, you can enrol in the core courses and do not have to wait until you have passed MUSC7050.
Students cannot enrol in MUSC7050 if they have passed MUSC7060.
