MUSC1600 Exemption Test

MUSC1600 (Musicianship 1) is a core course in the Bachelor of Music and a compulsory course in the Bachelor of Arts Music major and minor and in the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours) Music major. First-year students in these programs with advanced knowledge of music theory may be eligible for an exemption for this course if they pass an opt-in test in the Semester 2 Orientation Week.

Students who are interested in taking the test must complete the expression of interest webform by 4pm on Monday of Sem 2 Orientation Week and attend the test when it is scheduled in Sem 2 Orientation Week. If you are unable to attend the scheduled time, you must enrol in MUSC1600.

You will be advised of the outcome of your test in Sem 2 Orientation Week.

  • If you do not pass the test, you must enrol in MUSC1600.
  • If you pass the test, you can enrol in MUSC2060 (Musicianship 2) instead of MUSC1600 in Sem 2 of your first year, or enrol in another course in the current semester and enrol in MUSC2060 in Sem 2 of your second year (when you would usuallly enrol in MUSC2060 if you are following your Music program study plan). Your exemption will be noted on your studies report.

Students who receive an exemption for MUSC1600 are required to complete another #2 course as part of their degree, as an exemption does not reduce the number of units required for completion of your program.

  • Bachelor of Music students must complete an additional #2 from the Bachelor of Music flexible core courses list.
  • Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours) students must complete an additional #2 from the Music major level 3 electives list.
