Postgraduate Music Program Elective Courses

Students in the Master of Music or the Graduate Certificate in Music can request permission to take courses that are not listed on the Program and Course Requirements page for their program.

  • Master of Music (1.5 years) students can request a maximum of #6 of level 3, 4 and 7 courses
  • Master of Music (1 year) students can request a maximum of #4 of level 4 and 7 courses
  • Graduate Certificate in Music students can request a maximum of #2 of level 3, 4 and 7 courses

Postgraduate music students cannot request permission to take level 1 or level 2 courses.

To request approval to take a level 3 or level 4 course with the Music discipline descriptor (MUSC), you must enrol in the course. The program convenor reviews and approves all enrolments in level 3 and level 4 MUSC courses after confirming that you are eligible to enrol in that course and have not exceeded the maximum units for your program of study. You will be advised if you are not approved to take the course as a program elective. If you are approved, it will be noted on your studies report.

To request approval to take a level 3, 4 or 7 course with another discipline descriptor, you must complete the Request for Approval of Postgraduate Music Program Elective Course form. Program elective courses must be pedagogically relevant to the study of the academic discipline of music, so you must provide an explanation of the academic relevance of the course to your postgraduate music program. For example,

  • taking a language course to improve your language proficiency may be relevant to an opera singer who is approved to enrol in Practical Studies and performing repertoire in that language.
  • taking a writing course to improve your academic English writing skills may be relevant to a student who is approved to enrol in the Master of Music thesis course.

In making a decision about your request, the program convenor considers

  1. whether you are eligible to enrol in that course and have not exceeded the maximum units for your program of study,
  2. that the course coordinator has endorsed your request and confirmed you meet the prerequisites for their course,  and
  3. your explanation of the academic relevance of the course to your postgraduate music program.

You will be advised of the outcome of your request. If you are approved, it will be noted on your studies report.
