Artists

Trish Dean, cello

Tasmanian-born cellist Trish Dean is CEO and co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q and has enjoyed a distinguished career as soloist, chamber musician, orchestral principal and educator. She has performed in major venues worldwide including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, the Kennedy Center, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and has collaborated with international artists including Alexander Sitkovetsky, Jack Liebeck, Paul Meyer and the Navarra Quartet, as well as with many leading Australian musicians and ensembles. Trish is a member of the Australian World Orchestra, has appeared as principal cellist with the Sydney, Queensland and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, and held the position of Associate Principal with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the 1990s. Several leading Australian composers, including Matthew Hindson, Elena Kats-Chernin, Andrew Schultz and Paul Dean, have written works for her. She has recorded for ABC Classics and broadcast the Australian premieres of Prokofiev’s Sonata for Solo Cello and Myaskovsky’s Sonata for Cello and Piano. As Artistic Director she previously held positions at the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and Camden Haven Music Festival.

Paul Dean, clarinet

Clarinetist Paul Dean is widely regarded as one of Australia’s foremost musicians, working across a broad range of roles as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, composer and Artistic Director. He is currently the Kinnane Professor of Music at the University of Queensland, co-Artistic Director of Ensemble Q, conductor of the University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Australian World Orchestra. He was a founding member and Artistic Director of Southern Cross Soloists and the Bangalow Music Festival, before his appointment as Artistic Director of the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne. As a composer, Paul won the coveted Paul Lowin Prize in 2022 for his Symphony No. 1 ‘Black Summer’ and an APRA AMCOS Art Music Award in 2023 for his Double Bass Concerto. He has been Composer in Residence with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, and has been commissioned to write works for major artists and orchestras including the Australian World Orchestra, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, Queensland Youth Symphony, and international artists including Jack Liebeck, Michael Collins and Torleif Thedéen.

Ensemble Q Australia

Trish and Paul created and are Artistic Directors of Ensemble Q Australia, one of Australia’s most acclaimed chamber ensembles. Based in Brisbane, Ensemble Q has garnished many five star reviews since their inception in 2017 as Ensemble in Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium and Company in Residence at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). They were celebrated by full halls across Australia as National Touring Artists for Musica Viva Australia with William Barton in 2024 and were Ensemble in Residence at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in 2022. They have toured internationally to Malaysia and in 2027 (their 10th birthday year) they have been invited to perform and conduct a teaching residence at the prestigious Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore and perform a national tour for Chamber Music New Zealand.

Drawing together some of Australia’s finest musicians, Ensemble Q Australia presents a national concert series at the Melbourne Recital Centre, University of Queensland GHD Auditorium and Sydney Opera House Utzon Room. Their impact on future generations is tangible through nine years of one-on-one mentorships of talented young chamber musicians from tertiary institutions, a reciprocal program with the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), educational workshops and mentorships through regional touring activities across Queensland and their One Day Festival at Sandgate Town Hall, which includes a four-tiered mentorship program.
