What does Australian music sound like through the voice of a saxophone ensemble? This semester, the UQ Saxophone Ensemble explores that question with a program made entirely of works by Australian composers—celebrating the creativity, character, and diversity of music being written right here at home.
The program takes us on a journey through bold rhythms, vibrant colours, evocative landscapes, and imaginative contemporary sound worlds. Featured works include Funky Fanfare by Lisa Cheney, Ehwaz by Lachlan Kuhn, Robinson Gorge by Robert Burrell, Tower of Flower by Martin Kay, and Sirenes by Ben Marshall.
The concert also marks a particularly special occasion with the world premiere of Prominence by UQ composition student Angela Zhang, winner of the Alumni Friends Reisner Prize for 2026. Bringing a brand-new work from the university's own composition community to the stage is a fitting centrepiece for a concert dedicated to Australian voices.
Performing music by local and living composers matters. It allows ensembles to engage directly with the people creating the music of our time, gives audiences the chance to discover new Australian works, and helps build a repertoire that reflects our own communities, places, and experiences.
