The School of Music is participating in the 2027 UQ Summer Research Program, and is currently offering up to two scholarships for students to become involved in an exciting research project within the School for 6 weeks from Monday 11 January to Friday 19 February 2026.

A Preliminary Examination of Instrumental Music Teacher Preparedness in Australia

Duration: 6 Weeks

Description: This project investigates the preparedness of instrumental music teachers for professional practice following completion of tertiary music training programs in Australia. Scholars will work with academic staff to conduct a comprehensive review of national and international literature examining instrumental music teacher education, professional competencies, workforce expectations, and transitions from tertiary study to employment. While drawing on global research and policy contexts, the project will focus specifically on the instrumental music education landscape in Australia, particularly Queensland. Scholars will contribute to mapping existing knowledge regarding the skills, knowledge, and pedagogical capacities required of instrumental music teachers in contemporary educational settings. They will also explore current and emerging research methodologies and conceptual models that may inform future investigations into teacher preparedness, professional learning, and workforce development. By the conclusion of the Summer Research Project, students will have developed a foundational understanding of instrumental music teacher education research and contributed to the early stages of a broader research agenda in this area.

Expected Outcomes and Deliverables: Scholars will develop skills in conducting systematic and scoping literature reviews, synthesising research findings, and critically evaluating educational research. Students will contribute to the development of an annotated bibliography and thematic review of relevant literature relating to instrumental music teacher preparation in Australia and internationally. They will also investigate potential theoretical frameworks and research methods that may guide future studies in Queensland. The skills and knowledge gained through this project will provide valuable preparation for honours-level and postgraduate research in music education and instrumental pedagogy.

Suitable For: This project is open to applications from students with interests in music education, instrumental pedagogy, and educational research. Experience in literature searching and academic writing is required. An understanding of qualitative research methods would be advantageous. Students should demonstrate strong analytical and communication skills and an interest in the future development of music education.
