The School of Music is participating in the 2025 UQ Summer Research Program, and is currently offering up to two scholarships for students to become involved in an exciting research project within the School for 6 weeks from Monday 13 January to Friday 21 February 2025.

Available Project

Symphonic Music in Motion

Duration: 6 Weeks

Description: This project investigates the processes behind composing a large orchestral work. Scholars will act as a composer's assistant to Associate Professor Eve Klein, who is preparing an orchestral work for performance by the UQ Symphony Orchestra in 2025. The project explores the incorporation of choreography and movement into music composition and its communication in music scores. Scholars will work with Klein on score and part preparation. By the end of the Summer Research Project students will have a developed sense of professional composition research processes, and capabilities reproducing professional quality scores which communicate aspects of choreography to performers.

Expected Outcomes and Deliverables: Scholars will gain a thorough understanding of score and part preparation across all instrument families of the orchestra. They will also develop skills in music composition research processes. The skills and knowledge gained through this project prepare students for future research at honours and postgraduate levels.

Suitable For: This project is open to applications from students with music composition and score preparation experience. You must have strong prior experience using Dorico Pro 5 notation software, as well as a basic understanding of part preparation. Only UQ enrolled students are eligible. Please contact Associate Professor Eve Klein prior to submitting an application.

Primary Supervisor: Associate Professor Eve Klein
