Student Ensembles

The School of Music recognises the importance of ensemble training for music students and encourages vigorous and enthusiastic participation. All UQ students can audition for a place in the School's two student ensembles:

  • UQ Symphony Orchestra
  • UQ Chorale

All string players are guaranteed a position in the UQSO, but are still required audition in order to determine a seat allocation (e.g., Violin I, Violin II, etc). While not compulsory, it is recommended that students participate in any of the following ensembles:

Experience gained through participation in ensemble rehearsals and performances is a required part of the weekly learning program of all Bachelor of Music (Honours) students, who are required to participate in at least one of these ensembles. Eligible non-BMus(Hons) students may gain elective credit through the Large Ensemble courses (#2/semester) or through the concurrent Diploma in Music Performance. Alternatively, students may participate purely for enjoyment for a fee of $200/semester.  All of the ensembles work towards developing excellence in rhythmic accuracy, pitch discrimination, acquiring a full dynamic range, and developing musical style and vitality through a variety of rehearsal techniques employed by each ensemble director.

Each ensemble director chooses repertoire and devises a rehearsal schedule and roster according to the skills of the ensemble members, and also to suit the performance venue, orchestration and type of concert to be presented. There may be additional rehearsals during the year, depending on performance commitments. Sectional Rehearsals may also be arranged.
