The School of Music recognises the importance of ensemble training for music students and encourages vigorous and enthusiastic participation. All UQ students can audition for a place in the School's four student ensembles:
- UQ Symphony Orchestra
- UQ Winds
- UQ Chorale
- UQ Chamber Singers
Experience gained through participation in ensemble rehearsals and performances is a required part of the weekly learning program of all Bachelor of Music (Honours) students, who are required to participate in at least one of these ensembles. All of the ensembles work towards developing excellence in rhythmic accuracy, pitch discrimination, acquiring a full dynamic range, and developing musical style and vitality through a variety of rehearsal techniques employed by each ensemble director.
Each ensemble director chooses repertoire and devises a rehearsal schedule and roster according to the skills of the ensemble members, and also to suit the performance venue, orchestration and type of concert to be presented. There may be additional rehearsals during the year, depending on performance commitments. Sectional Rehearsals may also be arranged. There is usually some overlap of players in the wind area across both instrumental ensembles, largely dictated by the orchestration of the chosen repertoire.
