Join us in the GHD Auditorium for final performance of the UQ Saxophone Ensemble for 2025 as they present their latest program, Underground. Under the direction of Dr Emma Di Marco, the UQSE brings together University of Queensland students, School of Music students, and talented young performers from the wider community in a dynamic celebration of saxophone excellence.

Underground is a diverse program of works celebrating the versatility and virtuosity of the saxophone in a variety of musical contexts. Audiences will be treated to contemporary and grooving Australian repertoire such as Ball's Underground; energetic and magical music from the movies including arrangements of The Magnificent Seven and Miyazaki Medley; as well as lush and comforting transcriptions such as Vaughn Williams' Sea Songs and Grainger's Molly on the Shore. The concert concludes with the Southern Hemisphere premiere of Geiss' new work for saxophone ensemble Final Bow which is a musical tribute to pioneer of the saxophone and esteemed saxophone pedagogue Jean-Marie Londeix (1933-2025). Jean-Marie Londeix (1932–2025) was a French classical saxophonist, renowned for his pivotal role in establishing the saxophone in the classical repertoire. A student of Marcel Mule, he was a concert soloist, educator, and advocate for contemporary composers, which resulted in over 100 works being dedicated to him. He was a professor at the conservatories of Dijon and Bordeaux, founded the French Saxophonists Association (AsSaFra) and the International Saxophone Committee, and authored numerous pedagogical works.

Whether you're a saxophone enthusiast or simply love live music, this concert promises an evening of joy, skill, and musical exploration. Don’t miss the chance to hear this outstanding ensemble bring these diverse works to life.
