Patterns in Blue is a dynamic and adventurous clarinet ensemble based at the University of Queensland’s School of Music. Comprised of talented student performers and joined by a rotating lineup of esteemed guest artists, the ensemble is a vibrant showcase of collaboration, creativity, and musical excellence. Under the inspiring leadership of renowned clarinetist Professor Paul Dean, Patterns in Blue brings a fresh energy to an eclectic repertoire that spans centuries. Their programs move seamlessly from the rich, vocal-inspired textures of Renaissance and Romantic choral works—by composers such as William Byrd and Anton Bruckner—to the rhythmic drive and harmonic colour of 20th-century clarinet masterpieces, including Alfred Uhl’s celebrated Divertimento.

The ensemble takes its name from Patterns in Blue, a clarinet choir work by esteemed and inspirational Australian composer John Gilfedder. His music, and this work in particular, has become a touchstone for the ensemble’s identity: lyrical, bold, and unapologetically expressive. With a passion for both tradition and innovation, Patterns in Blue continues to push the boundaries of what a clarinet ensemble can be.
