Be among the first to experience music in the magnificently revitalised Avalon Theatre at St Lucia as The University of Queensland School of Music proudly presents the Spectrum Festival Opening Gala.
The evening's program spans Baroque masterpieces to contemporary compositions. UQ School of Music's newest staff member, internationally acclaimed clarinettist and composer Paul Dean will perform the lyrical second movement of Gerald Finzi's Clarinet Concerto. Audiences will also experience Dean's own Covid Lockdown Miniatures for violin and clarinet—a poignant reflection on resilience through music.
Featured throughout the concert is Pulse Chamber Ensemble, led by virtuoso UQ staff members Doretta Balkizas (violin) and Patrick Murphy (cello). The UQ Singers will bookend the performance, under Shaun Brown's expert direction, and celebrated flute ensemble SignWaves led by Patrick Nolan will make an appearance. Baroque treasures by Vivaldi, Pergolesi and Handel will complement the newer works on the program.
This gala event not only represents a significant collaboration between students and staff, but also celebrates an architectural gem and its potential for giving back to the broader community. Following the performance, complimentary light refreshments will be served from 7:45pm - 8:45pm.

Important event information
Seating: Please note, tickets are general admission and are accessed via stairs. Please arrive with your group so you can find seats together. For accessible seating, please contact engagement@hass.uq.edu.au.
Parking: There is limited parking available onsite. The theatre is easily accessible via public transport, particularly using Brisbane's bus and ferry network. To plan your journey refer to the Translink website.
Performance: Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the performance at 6pm.
Refreshments: Pre-show refreshments will be available for purchase from 5:45pm. Following the performance, complimentary light refreshments will be served.
