Enrolling in Ensemble Studies Courses
The Bachelor of Musics and the Master of Music include Ensemble Studies courses as flexible cores and program electives. Each course takes one semester and cannot be repeated.
- MUSC2750, MUSC3750 and MUSC7650 are offered in Sem 1
- MUSC2755, MUSC3755 and MUSC7655 are offered in Sem 2
There are six ensemble options in Ensemble Studies. Four are open to all students who can take Ensemble Studies as a general elective in their program, which two are restricted to Bachelor of Music and Master of Music students.
- UQ Chorale
- UQ Early Music Ensemble
- UQ Symphony Orchestra
- UQ Wind Symphony
- Chamber Music (restricted to Bachelor of Music and Master of Music students)
- Stagecraft (restricted to Bachelor of Music and Master of Music students)
Students must audition for an ensemble option for permission to enrol in Ensemble Studies. Approval is granted only to students who:
- submit an expression of interest
- complete a satisfactory audition and interview
- are assigned a place in the ensemble
Expression of Interest (EOI)
Your EOI must be submitted through the appropriate process for your ensemble option.
- the online webforms for the four open ensembles at Auditioning for UQ Ensembles
- the online webform for Stagecraft
- by an email to the course coordinator for Chamber Music (see below for details)
Current students must apply by the end of the month before Orientation Week for the semester.
- You must apply by 31 January to request permission to audition for Ensemble Studies in Sem 1
- You must apply by 30 June to request permission to audition for Ensemble Studies in Sem 2
Commencing students must apply to request permission to audition for Ensemble Studies by Monday of Orientation Week of their commencing semester. You will go through the same steps as current students, but in a much smaller timeframe.
Chamber Music
Your chamber group must have a minimum of three members (two for groups that only include pianists and percussionists). Your chamber group may include one Bachelor of Music or Master of Music student who intends to participate in chamber music as an extension activity.
Your expression of interest email must include:
- The names, instrument, and proposed Ensemble Studies course code for all chamber group members
- The work(s) your chamber group is interested in rehearsing and performing this semester and a brief justification of your choice.
- Your preferred chamber music tutor(s).
Audition and Interview
If your EOI is accepted, the ensemble director will schedule an audition time for you in Orientation Week.
If you cannot audition in person because you do not arrive in Brisbane until Teaching Week 1, the ensemble director may give you permission to submit a video audition and be interviewed online.
Audition Outcome
The ensemble director will advise you of the outcome of your audition and interview. If you are assigned a place in the ensemble and requested permission to enrol in Ensemble Studies, you will be added to the class permission list in mySI-net for the relevant Ensemble Studies course. This allows you to enrol in the course.
