Ensemble Sooon is a modern chamber music ensemble imbricating notation and improvisation. The 2025 UQ concert series hears them perform works from their latest album ‘Raw,’ featuring saxophone, cello, and vibraphone. Sooon present virtuosic minimalism in Martin Kay’s Glasshouses, a quirky homage to Sinead O’Connor featuring poetry by Brentley Frazer, Ligeti’s Goat, an epic musical journey through tone rows, reggae, driving riffs, and free improvisation, plus the beautiful work of Hauer, rival to Schoenberg. Prepare for a joyous ride in a fast machine.
Martin Kay is lecturer in saxophone at Queensland Conservatorium. Danielle Bentley is an award-winning cellist and festival curator performing contemporary art music, classical, and commercial settings. Nozomi Omote is an eclectic percussionist in demand for her virtuoso playing and open improvisational approach.
Ensemble Sooon have released two live recordings for grassroots collective Alchemix as well as two studio albums on APRA-award-winning Made Now Music. Sooon perform an energetic and accessible style of modern chamber music. In 2025 they will release their third studio album Septet for the End of Messiaen, collaborate with artists including harpist Emily Granger, composer/pianist Tristan Coehlo and trailblazing electronics and percussion duo Shugorei.
